Canned Food Drive for CHS

Monday July 2, 2012 was a big day for Southwest Florida College in Fort Myers as ROTARACT and The Criminal Justice Fraternity (SWFC campus clubs) shared the joy and excitement of donating a sizable collection of much needed nonperishable goods to the Children’s home Society.
“The Children’s Home Society of Florida is a not-for-profit organization providing social services designed to protect children at risk of abuse, neglect or abandonment; to strengthen and stabilize families.” (http://www.chsfl.org)
Both ROTARACT and the Criminal Justice Fraternity began their efforts at the beginning of June by promoting the canned food initiative to SWFC students, faculty and staff, but soon spread the word to local communities and friends. After a truly rewarding experience, both club Presidents (Maynor Luna of ROTARACT and Don Baker of the Criminal Justice Fraternity) could be found smiling ear to ear after unloading all the nonperishable items into the CHS vehicle.  Stay tuned for future community involvement as the CJ Fraternity and ROTARACT plan on making a difference everywhere and in every way they can!

Campus Vs. Campus SOFTBALL!

It was a hot day Saturday June 2nd at the BMX Park in Cape Coral during an intense Southwest Florida College Campus verses Campus softball game.  The competition in the air was heavier than the heat as Fort Myers students battled it out with Port Charlotte students;  both teams seeking victory, but only one team could claim the infamous golden trophy in the end! With a large fan base of friends and family members in attendance to offer support for the players, and ROTARACT present to keep the masses hydrated with snow cones and cola, a victory was determined.  Winning  5 of 7 innings and a campus verses campus competitive crusade until the end, FORT MYERS was CONGRATULATED for having tallied the most game points. Fort Myers may have walked away with the trophy in hand, but both campuses celebrated as Southwest Florida College spirit echoed throughout the park that day!

The Easter Bunny Comes to SWFC!!!

Bounce houses, face paint, cotton candy and fun,

Chalk art, prizes, laughter and the sun,

Chocolate filled eggs and candy galore,
Music, pictures, plus tons more…

The Easter Bunny paid a visit to Southwest Florida College all week long in April, bringing sweet treat surprises to students in class during finals week and leaving behind empty eggshells and smiles. Mr. Cotton tail made his grand appearance on Saturday during one of the colleges biggest events: “The Spring Fling”. From pictures with the Easter Bunny to the competitive spirit of an Easter egg hunt, and back around to the bounce house; all event attendees (ranging from SWFC faculty, students, friends and family members) could be found indulging in the Spring Fling’s festivities. Enjoy the fun, check out the pictures below, and make sure to keep your  ears open for more Student Services announcements and events and to come!

Student Vs. Faculty Basketball Game!!!

Southwest Florida College Student Services hosted an electrifying basketball game March 9, 2012 where Faculty and Student teams battled it out on the hard wood floors of the Stars Complex Friday night. With hecklers claiming glory for the winners and humiliation for the losers, the action was non-stop! For the first game of the night, our SWFC’s Fast and Furious Faculty members (A.K.A. team: “Shoot While Fans Cheer”) bit the bullet as they all but owned the basketball in an edge of your seat competition against the first group of student players known as “The A Team”. With “The A Team” coming out on top, they took a break while game two ensued.  Game two consisted of the Faculty players and the second student group who called themselves the “Mon-STARS”.  Although faculty put up a good fight, the “Mon-STARS” owned the score board. The third and final game was both winners from the previous two games. The “A” Team Vs. the Mon-STARS would compete in a fierce battle for championship. With tension in the air, sweat on the court, and basketballs in the eager hands of determined students, a small break was given before the third and final game. While players took their brief breather, our half time entertainment entered the arena: Paradise Tiny’s, a competitive cheerleading squad consisting of 8 Cheerleaders ranging from ages 4 to 6, performed their hearts out! Stunts, tumbling, smiles and a spirited performance by the Paradise Tiny’s, left fans cheering and pumped for the final game. Finally, the time had come: The “A” Team VS. The Mon-STARS!  After 16 minutes of fans bellowing, faculty fist pumping and music booming, our winners were announced: congratulations to the Mon-STARS, our first place, 2012 Faculty Versus Students Champions.  After a night of intensity and competition, all teams high fived and celebrated. This was yet another successful SWFC event. Stay tuned for up and coming events and for more information, email tfox@swfc.edu. GO SWFC!!!

STUDENT I-SEARCH PAPERS REVEAL INDIVIDUAL LEARNING STYLES

As I sit in my Composition 1 class, I am really proud of the interesting things my students have learned about themselves by doing their I-Search/research projects.  This project required them to look inward as they discovered themselves through Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory.  It was so cool to watch my students come to understand themselves better as learners--and even as to how they came about choosing the career paths they have decided to take.

My hope is that you all will continue to think about these things as you continue in life because employers really have begun to look at these things when making hiring decisions.  I promise you will see some of those fun tests, again, we took in class!

I look forward to reading your final drafts of these I-Search papers--AND your final self-reflection essays!
